Positive Attitude and Healing

Learn how changing your attitude can improve your healing process. Our minds are so amazing and powerful that by using positive thoughts we can help heal our bodies.


Having a positive mind set helps establish better habits for healthier living. When we make better choices in our lives, we improve the potential to live longer. Some examples are meditation and deep breathing. When we practice these skills there are not only mental changes that occur but also physical changes that occur.


Positive attitude has the benefits of decreasing depression because you now have hope that things will turn out better. You will also have better stress management because you will be eliminating negative thoughts. You can also boost your immune system with positive thoughts. Those that have positive thoughts have decrease length of colds and illness because they are continuously making better health decisions.


So how do we make our thoughts more positive? ANSWER: there are many ways but here are a few ways to start.

  1. Reframing negative thoughts: start by noticing your thoughts and what they are? Can you reframe the negative thought into something positive?

  2. Write a gratitude journal daily or weekly. By writing things down that you are grateful for you will start to see how many good things are going on in your life

  3. Self Talk: notice how you talk to yourself are you kind and compassionate to yourself? Or do you talk negatively to yourself. See if you can give yourself more grace and love.


How does this relate to physical therapy?

Injuries are hard and can be taxing to the body and the mind. When we can approach an injury with positive attitude the effects are incredible. I have seen thousands of injuries during my career and those that choose a positive outlook almost always recover faster and stronger than those with a negative outlook.

These things happen for a reason in the grand scheme of life and if we take a curious approach to injuries amazing things can happen. These can be opportunities for us grow and learn something new about ourselves. We are always right where we need to be even if it sometimes this isn’t where we want to be.
